THE LONG VIEW: A Portrait of Ruth Bader Ginsburg In Nine Songs illuminates key aspects of the iconic Justice’s personal and professional life through settings of text from letters, remembrances, and even Court opinions.  This 45-minute cycle is anchored in the modern American art song tradition, integrating jazz and musical theater influences into a uniquely attractive set that offers the performers a lyrical sensibility requiring strong rhythmic and interpretative skills. The many characters and settings represented in the cycle lend themselves to the possibility of sharing the cycle in a variety of ways, from one solo singer to a quartet of singers plus piano.

Resolved

for Medium-Low Voice & Piano

“RESOLVED: Songs of Women’s Suffrage & the 19th Amendment” illuminates key aspects of the more than eighty-year struggle waged by American women to gain the right to vote. The texts are drawn from public announcements, letters, speeches and interviews with some of the key figures in the American suffrage movement.  The focus of this song cycle is squarely placed on arias for Sojourner Truth, Ida B Wells and Mary Church Terrell, Black women often underrepresented in the historical narrative.  Recitatives and ariettas for Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B Anthony and Febb Esminger Burn provide pillars for the cantata-like structure of the cycle. This 18-minute cycle is anchored in the modern American art song tradition, integrating many musical traditions into a uniquely attractive set that offers the performers a lyrical sensibility requiring strong rhythmic and interpretative skills. The many characters and settings represented in the cycle lend themselves to the possibility of performing the cycle with multiple singers in the mezzo-soprano range.

Refuge

for Three-part choral ensemble & Piano

This setting of Sara Teasdale’s poem, “Refuge” includes an intriguing introduction that organically repeats the word “refuge” in a number of languages. The angst of Teasdale’s poetry is reflected in the driving accompaniment and shifting meters. Adding a variety of percussion instruments to this work will enhance the overall performance.
